For the second year in a row, a Kohn Pedersen Fox-designed building managed to win the top spot in the annual Emporis Skyscraper Award program: MGM Cotai, the enormous $3.4 billion casino-hotel-resort in Macau, designed in collaboration with Wong Tung & Partners Limited, was selected by the jurors as the best new tall building. One year ago, KPF, in conjunction with Baum Architects, also won the title for the 1,819-foot-tall Lotte World Tower in Seoul.

The latest addition to the MGM Resorts portfolio in China, a super-luxe hotel 1,390 room casino, has taken out this year's top skyscraper award. Real estate research company Emporis, which undertakes an annual Skyscraper Awards to celebrate the newest innovations in vertical design, has announced the top 10 buildings for 2019 from a pool of 500 nominees. To qualify, nominated buildings must have been completed during the year of the award, and must be at least 100 metres in height.

According to building data research company Emporis, Seoul in South Korea has more high-rise buildings, with 16,359. Emporis defines a high-rise as a building at least 35m, or 12 storeys tall. In second place is Moscow, Russia, with 12,317 high-rises, followed by Hong Kong in third place, with 7,913.
