Facts

  • The preliminary site plan was approved by the City of Bloomington Planning Commission in July 2004.
  • This project is focused around Bloomington Central Station, a light rail station for Metro Transit's Hiawatha Line which connects the Mall of America, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, and downtown Minneapolis.
  • The residential units envisioned on the eastern part of the site would feature views over the Minnesota River Valley and National Wildlife Refuge to the southeast.
  • This is the largest transit-oriented development yet proposed near the Hiawatha Line.
  • The project lies just south of the new North-South runway for Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport scheduled for use in late 2005. Among the 15 busiest airports in the world, MSP's new runway will influence development on this site.
  • The development will eliminate acres of surface parking and decades-old low-rise office and warehouse structures.
  • An additional light rail station at 28th Avenue, on the site's western border, contains a large park-and-ride lot for commuters.
  • Construction of the Central Park, located adjacent to the Light Rail station, just north of 8170 33rd Avenue South, began in August 2006.
