Facts

  • Consists of two pairs of towers designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, on adjacent blocks of Lake Shore Drive in North Streeterville.
  • The complex has no official name, but is commonly referred to as the "Lake Shore Drive Residences" in architectural literature.
  • The southern pair of buildings (860-880) was built earlier, and is more famous as a pioneering example of the International Style.
  • In 1976 the twin buildings at 860-880 became the seventh recipient of the American Institute of Architects' prestigious Twenty-Five Year Award.
  • One subtle aspect of the design of 860 and 880 is that the two outboard windows in each bay are slightly narrower than the two inboard ones.
