Facts

  • This public housing complex was constructed from 1950 to 1953, and included 13 towers, and 415 low-rise units. In total, this complex built just outside of downtown Detroit included 2,170 low-income housing units on 47 acres of land.
  • This tower complex was named for Edward J. Jeffries, a former Detroit Recorder's Court judge, who was also father of a Detroit mayor.
  • The last demolition, which took down 4 towers, occured on April 29, 2001 to make way for a mixed-income neighborhood. As of that date, of the 13 towers, only 3 remained, and were converted into age-restricted public housing.
  • Because of poor construction, and cost-cutting measures, these towers were plagued by mechanical failures, so many that they were completed shuttered in 1992.
