Facts

  • Named after Lucien Galtier, who chose the name St. Paul, Galtier Plaza is a large mixed-use project overlooking Mears Park in Lowertown, on the east side of St. Paul's Central Business District.
  • When completed in the mid-1980s, Galtier Plaza had a large retail arcade with restaurants and movie theaters. The commercial component of the project was less than successful and by 2000, most of this space had been converted to office use.
  • Galtier Plaza also contains the downtown branch of the St. Paul YMCA, a large fitness club.
  • The towers rise from a 7-floor base containing office space, parking, and additional residential units in the On the Park Condominiums.
  • The historic Brooks Building at the corner of 5th & Jackson Streets was integrated into the project.
  • There are 675 parking spaces divided between residents, contract holders, and the public.
  • The complex is connected by skyway to 180 East Fifth, Mears Park Place, and 375 Jackson.
  • The Northwestern Electric Building formerly stood in the middle of the block facing 6th Street.
  • The facades of the demolished Bishop Block and James P. Allen Building were incorporated into the base facing Sibley Street.
  • The residential component includes 367 rental apartments and 101 owner-occupied condominiums.
