Facts

  • The campus, located southwest of Chicago's downtown, is divided into two parts: the Medical Center campus to the west, and the main campus to the east.
  • The east campus was designed primarily by Walter Netsch of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and is one of the world's classic examples of brutalist design.
  • Netsch's design was significantly altered in the mid-1990s with the demolition of a large system of above-ground walkways, platforms, and amphitheaters.
  • The brutalist architecture on the campus includes a wide variety of forms, from the strong grids of the highrises to the complex labyrinths of the three lowrise "field theory" buildings.
  • The west campus is part of the Illinois Medical Center, along with Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Hospital, Cook County Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Hospital.
