Facts

  • This large mixed-use development is built over a former Illinois Central railroad yard, between the Chicago River and Grant Park.
  • The buildings are interconnected by a 3-level street system and a labyrinthine shopping concourse.
  • The upper street level is primarily for local access; the middle level for through traffic; and the lower level for deliveries and freight.
  • The Illinois Center concourse can be accessed through several points, but the main entrance is through Michigan Plaza South.
  • Several buildings on the fringe of Illinois Center appear to be part of the project but are not; e.g. Aon Center and Prudential Plaza.
  • The project was originally supposed to extend east to Lake Michigan. The undeveloped portion was turned into a temporary golf course, and sold to other developers.
