Somerset is a small village in southern Montgomery County, near the Friendship Heights Metro Station and border with Washington, DC. The land containing the three-tower Somerset House complex was de-annexed from the town in 1988, just before completion of the first tower. The land reverted to control of Montgomery County, as part of unincorporated Chevy Chase. Residents gave up the large annual property tax windfall in order to maintain political control, fearing the new residents would have priorities that differed from those in the existing town, populated almost entirely by single family homes.
