Tumwater was founded next to the falls of the Deschutes River at the south end of Puget Sound as New Market in 1846 by a group of pioneers, making it the first United States settlement on the Puget Sound. The city incorporated in 1875. Tumwater was home to the famous Olympia Brewery until it was sold off in the 1990s.
