Originally named Limestone, the first convicts arrived in 1827 to mine the area. In 1843 the settlement became officially known as Ipswich, making it the oldest provincial city in Queensland. Ipswich was proclaimed as a municipality in 1860, and a city in 1904, the city was nominated to be the state capital of Queensland, however that went to Brisbane, due to it having an ocean port. Ipswich is only 40 kilometres south west of the state capital, Brisbane, and is connected to Brisbane by the Ipswich Motorway. Ipswich suburbs are frequently included in the Brisbane metropolitan area. In recent years, the population has boomed in Ipswich, with house prices in Brisbane rising, making people choose to live in Ipswich and commute to Brisbane each day.
