The area was first settled in 1833 by the Hudson Bay Company at Fort Nisqually.
In 1906 E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. acquired the property and turned the area into a company town. In 1951 the company sold the properties and the town was incorporated in that same year as The Village of Dupont. The entire old village was placed on the National Historic Register in 1987.
Adjacent land was developed into Northwest Landing which strives to create the same atmosphere as the old tree lined village. This development has brought the relatively constant population of 550 to the present population and will house a total of 12,000 once built out.
