The current village of Nauvoo was founded in 1839 by Mormon settlers who were forced to leave Missouri because of the 1838 Mormon War. The city grew to approximately 12,000 residents before tensions with non-Mormon residents in neighboring communities led to the exodus to Utah, now the center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
