Bradford is the largest city in McKean County. It is located 78 miles (126 km) south of Buffalo, New York. Settled in 1823, it was chartered as a city in 1879 and grew as an oil boomtown in the late 1800s. The population peaked at 17,691 in 1940 but has been declining since. Major empoyers include Zippo, a manufacturer of collectible pocket lighters, and Case, which manufactures collectible knives. The second largest employer is Bradford Regional Medical Center.
