While most Johnson County municipalities were the result of suburban growth of the two Kansas Citys, Merriam's history dates back to the trails west in the 1840s. Turkey Creek flows south-to-north through the town which made it a natural stop. Then the railroads laid track through the Turkey Creek Valley and in the 1960s I-35 was built. The city of today is a well-balanced mix of residential, retail, office and light industrial uses.
