Chelsea is a small city located in the northwestern corner of Washtenaw County. Chelsea was first settled in 1820 by Cyrus Beckwith, along with Elisha and James Congdon, with Elisha naming the town after his hometown of Chelsea of Massachusetts. In 1850, it experienced its first wave of growth when the Michigan Central Railroad built a station in the small village. Most recently, the city increased its political autonomy by incorporating as a city in 2004.
