North Adams is a small industrial city located in the Berkshire Mountains in the northwest corner of the state. Named in honor of Samuel Adams, a leader of the American Revolution, it was settled in 1737 and incorporated in 1878. After years of economic decline North Adams was made home of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MassMoCA), the largest contemporary art museum in the United States. Since MassMoCa opened in 1999, North Adams has become a center of tourism and culture.
