Shawnee is located about 40 miles east of Oklahoma City and is the seat of Pottawatomie County. The city was founded in 1889 during the Oklahoma Land Rush, and it grew rapidly like other settlements during this period. As a result of this growth it was in the running to become the State Capital, though it lost to Oklahoma City.
Today Shawnee is actively re-developing it's Main Street and downtown area. It is also reflective of the growth in nearby suburbs as it continues to expand.
