The largest city in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Marquette is the seat of the county by the same name. Located on the shores of Lake Superior, the city has long been an important port for the shipment of iron ore from mines just to the west. The downtown includes many impressive historic buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, evidence of its early importance and wealth. Located on the city's northside is Northern Michigan University, with the Superior Dome, the world's largest wooden domed structure.
