Frederick is Maryland's third-largest incorporated city. It is located about 45 miles (72 km) northwest of Washington near the Catoctin Mountains. It is the seat of Frederick County and a center of industry, mining, and agriculture. Frederick was laid out in 1745 and incorporated in 1817. Its stituation as an important crossroad gave it stragetic importance during the French and Indian and American Civil Wars. Frederick's skyline is dominated by five church spires. Federal-style rowhouses and Victorian homes give the city and historic charm.
