Located on the southern shore of the Tennessee River in extreme north, central Alabama, Decatur is the seat of Morgan County. The city was incorporated on December 8, 1826, and named in honor of the famous American naval hero Stephen Decatur. Due to its location along both the river and railroad, Decatur would become the regions transportation center prior to the American Civil War. Today, the city remains an important economic center and utility power due to the influence of the TVA on the entire Tennessee Valley.
