The seat of Butler County since its formation in 1800 is located north of Pittsburgh. The village and county were named in honor of General Richard Butler (1743-1791), a Revolutionary War hero and Pennsylvania Congressman instrumental in the formation of the county from the subdivision of Allegheny County.
