Independence is best known for former President Harry S. Truman. The USA's 33rd President was born in Lamar, Missouri, but lived his adult life in Independence. President Truman and his wife, Bess, are buried on the grounds of the Truman Presidential Library. The Trumans' Victorian-style 1880s home on Delaware Street, is a national historic site, open to the public. Two of the biggest pieces of legislation of the 20th Century became law in Independence. In 1948, President Truman signed the executive order desegregating the military; in 1965, Mr. Truman looked on at the Truman Library when President Lyndon Johnson signed the Medicare Bill. The Santa Fe, California and Oregon Trails all headed west from Independence. The "Santa-Cali-Gon Days" on the town square each September are an annual recreation and celebration of this history. Independence is the county seat of Jackson County, Missouri. Famous native sons include author Richard Rhodes.
