Founded in 1837, Bedford is located in Cuyahoga County 12 miles southeast of downtown Cleveland. Part of Cuyahoga County's original Bedford Township, established in 1823, the area was first settled by New Englanders in 1815 near a Tinker's Creek gristmill. The Tinker's Creek Gorge remains preserved as part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Bedford. Hezekiah Dunham laid out the town center along Broadway Avenue at Warrensville Center Road. The city is the birthplace of Archibald M. Willard (1836-1918) painter of Spirit of '76 displayed at Cleveland City Hall.
