The capital of the Dutch side of the island of St. Maarten was founded by John Philips, a Dutch Naval captain, in 1763. The city is situated on the narrow strip of land between the Great Bay and the Great Salt Pond, and is the daily embarkment point to the island for thousands of cruise ship visitors. The Great Bay Beach was actually replenished with the sand that was dredged for new cruise ship piers.
