The city of Fort Mill is located just across the North Carolina border in York County, South Carolina, and it has a rich history. The city takes it name from a colonial-era British fort located in the area where the city would later be settled. Fort Mill was also the site of the last meeting of the full Confederate Cabinet during the American Civil War. This meeting was held in 1865 at the White Homestead, which is still intact within the city.
The city has become a southern suburb of Charlotte, as the Metrolina region has continued to grow over the past thirty years. The abandoned Heritage USA theme park is located within the city and its vacant Heritage USA Grand Hotel is the tallest building in the city. Fort Mill is also home to the Carrowinds Amusement Park, and the Charlotte Knights minor league baseball team.
