The "City of Homes" is a suburb located 6 miles southeast of downtown Cleveland. Founded as South Newburgh in a 1907 break from Newburgh Village, the city was renamed in honor of 20th US President James A. Garfield (1831-1881) upon its incorporation as a city in 1930. The city's largest employer is Marymount Hospital, a part of The Cleveland Clinic Health System.
