The "Magic City", located 7 miles southwest of Akron, was founded in 1891 by Ohio Columbus Barber and three of his Akron, business associates on 550 acres surrounding Lake Anna in Norton and Coventry Townships. Their intentions were to create a new industrial center in northeastern Ohio. O. C. Barber began his Diamond Match Company in the town that grew to incorporate as a city shortly after the 1910 census. Today, Barberton maintains its industrial base as the world headquarters of Babcock and Wilcox, Summit County's second largest employer, and home to a PPG Industries, Inc. manufacturing plant.
