Kinston lies in east-central North Carolina on the Neuse River, about 65 miles (105 km) southeast of Raleigh. It is a center for marketing bright-leaf tobacco and the home of several industries. First settled in 1740, it was known as King's Town until after the American Revolution, when the "g" was dropped. One of the last Confederate victories of the Civil War was won at the Battle of Wise Forks in 1865.
