Saint Clair Shores is a residential suburb that lies 13 miles (20.9 kilometers) northeast of downtown Detroit along the western shore of Lake Saint Clair. Originally settled in 1710 under the name "L'anse Creuse, the area remained a village until its incorporation as a city in 1951. Up until its incorporation, it was recognized as the largest village municipality in the United.
