Saint Clair Shores is a residential suburb that lies 13 miles northeast of downtown Detroit along the western shore of Lake Saint Clair. Originally settled in 1710 under the name "L'anse Creuse," the area remained a village until its incorporation as a city in 1951. Up until its incorporation, it was recognized as the largest village municipality in the United States.
