Leawood was incorporated in 1948. It remained a bedroom suburb of the two Kansas Citys until the 750,000 square foot Leawood Town Center opened with 86 stores and shops in 1996. The city gets its name from the late Oscar G. Lee, who owned much of the original town site nearly a century ago. According to the Leawood Chamber of Commerce, realtors and developers began spelling the city's name with an "a" to give it individuality and distinctiveness.
