Geelong, the second largest city in Victoria is positioned on the north-facing and sheltered Corio Bay. Located 75 kilometers from Melbourne, Geelong is an important industrial centre and a deepwater port. Geelong has always been a major port and has always had a symbiotic relationship with the fertile agricultural and pastoral districts to the west and north-west of the city. Geelong’s heavy industry is mostly situated on the flat land beside the bay to the north of the CBD. Although it has an industrial reputation, the city is well-planned and attractive, featuring picturesque parks and ornate Victorian and Edwardian buildings. The city has started to look once again on its port as a leisure precinct, so popular in the fist years of the 20th century. In recent years, Geelong’s waterfront has undergone a multi-million dollar rejuvenation, transforming old warehouses and industrial complexes into a flourishing waterfront quarter filled with superb seafood restaurants, cafes, shops, hotels and over 100 colourful bollards representing people from Geelong’s history. The wooden 1930s bathing complex at Eastern Beach, with its lawns, sandy beach and shady trees, has also been restored to its Art Deco glory. Opposite Steampacket Place are the historic wool stores. Wool was auctioned, sold and stored there prior to its being shipped around the world from the 1880s until the 1970s. This generated Geelong’s wealth which is evident in such buildings as the City Hall and the General Post Office. The old wool stores are being transformed with the largest being converted into the award winning National Wool Museum. Geelong is an important commercial centre and it is developing a reputation as an educational hub with the city being home to Deakin University.
