A southern suburb of Birmingham, Hoover was incorporated on April 28, 1967. The city is named after William H. Hoover who in the 1950s moved his company, Employers Insurance of Alabama, Inc., into the area adjacent to U.S. Highway 31 where the city would develop. The city has seen rapid growth since the completion of Interstate 459 in the early 1980s and has become the sixth largest city in Alabama. The city is also the site of the Riverchase Galleria shopping and business center and the home of the Birmingham Barons minor league baseball team.
