New Castle lies in western Pennsylvania about 43 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. The Shanango and Mahoning Rivers joing there to form the Beaver. The surrounding area is rich in deposits of bituminous coal, limestone, and clay. Industries include pottery, steel products, and cement. Settlers from Delaware founded New Castle in 1798, building an iron furnace there. It was incorporated as a city in 1868, and is the seat of Lawrence County.
