Originally called Rat Portage, Kenora was incorporated in 1905. The city developed on the site of a Hudson Bay Company trading post, but quickly became a center for timber, commercial fishing, and gold mining. Located on the Trans-Canada Highway where it travels past the northern shore of Lake of the Woods in western Ontario, Kenora is now the center of a popular tourist region. The neighboring communities of Keewatin and Jaffray Melick were amalgamated with Kenora in 2000.
