Freeport is a small city in northwest Illinois, about 105 miles northwest of Chicago. It has a number of industries and is the center of a dairying and agricultural region. It was settled in 1835 and became a city in 1855. Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas met here on August 27, 1858 for the second of their famous debates.
