Located on the western bluffs of the Neches River, and forming the western point of southeast Texas' "Golden Triangle" with Orange to the east and Port Arthur to the south, Beaumont is the seat of Jefferson County and the largest city in southeast Texas. Receiving its initial charter on December 16, 1838, Beaumont would see modest growth until oil was struck just south of the city on January 10, 1901. The ensuing "oil boom" would result in dramatic population growth and a burgeoning skyline by the 1910s. Today the city is still recognized as the primary petrochemical complex of extreme Southeast Texas with numerous refineries and the city's port located outside of downtown, along the Neches River. Beaumont is also known as the home of Lamar University and the hometown of the legendary female athlete Babe Didrikson Zaharias.
