Shaker Heights is located in "The Heights" area of Cuyahoga County 10 miles southeast of downtown Cleveland. The land of the North Union Shaker Community began to be purchased in 1905 by The Van Sweringen Co. which created the master plan for land use in development of the area. As growth continued, the area separated from Cleveland Heights, incorporating as a village in 1911. The population increased throughout the 1920s when the Van Sweringen brothers linked Shaker Heights to their Terminal Tower project downtown by means of the company's Shaker Rapid Transit line, eventually leading to incorporation as a city in 1931. Most of this earlier development in the western section of the city is part of the Shaker Village Historic District, listed on the National Register of Histroic Places, a testament to the foresight in residential planning and adherence to zoning and architectural standards.
