Costa Mesa is situated in Orange County about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles, between Santa Ana, Irvine, Newport Beach, and Huntington Beach. It grew up around a small town named Harper established in 1909. The majority of the land that currently makes up the city was (and some of it still is) owned by the Segerstrom family, whose ranch was unofficially called "Goat Hills." The city was renamed Costa Mesa in 1923 because of its location on bluffs inland from Newport Beach. Incorporated in 1953, it is now home to industries such as electronics manufacturing, printing, boat-building, and construction.
