Tamaqua is a borough at the eastern edge of Schuylkill County in Pennsylvania's anthracite coal region. Located 12 miles (19 km) south of Hazleton and 35 miles (56 km) northwest of Allentown, it is a gateway to the Pocono Mountains.
Tamaqua was founded in 1799. The discovery of anthracite coal in the region in the early 1800s led to an era of prosperity unitl the 1950s, when coal mining throughout the region sharply declined.
The name Tamaqua (pronounced Tuh-MOCK-wuh) is a Native American word meaning "Land of the Beaver."
