The county seat of Bartholomew County, Columbus is a small city with a large architectural footprint. This "Athens of the Midwest" has one of the largest concentrations of important modern buildings in the United States, including designs by Cesar Pelli, I.M. Pei, Kevin Roche, Harry Weese, Gunnar Birkerts, John Carl Warnecke, and both Eliel and Eero Saarinen. In 1991, the American Institute of Architects surveyed 829 of its members. They ranked Columbus 6th among U.S. cities in architectural quality and innovation. Only Chicago, New York, Washington, San Francisco, and Boston were ranked higher.
