Situated on the north-eastern coast of Queensland, Townsville is the unofficial 'Capital' of North Queensland, and is a city that boasts a relaxed tropical lifestyle.
Townsville was founded in 1864 by John Melton Black and Robert Towns, and was originally a base for workers, who could not reach the nearby town of Bowen, whenever the Burdekin River was flooded.
However it wasn't long before Townsville outgrew Bowen. After a railway connection in 1882, and development of the man-made harbour in 1892, Townsvile boomed as a city.
Today, Townsvile ranks 13th largest city in Australia, and 5th largest in Queensland.
