Puyallup (pronounced [pju-æləp]) was founded by Ezra Meeker in the 1880s and became a center of the northwestern hops industry. The city now is known for its daffodils and strawberries. It also hosts the fifth largest fair in the United States with over 1.1 million attending every year. The fairground was also the site of Camp Harmony, a Japanese internment camp in the early 1940s. Puyallup has retained a small town feel, even though the adjacent South Hill has exploded with growth. Several new condominium projects have been built in the downtown area near the historic Pioneer Park.
