The city of SeaTac was incorporated in 1990. The city surrounds the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac Airport). The area was settled in the 1870s, but had little importance until the Airport was built in the 1940s. The area grew with the post war boom, but as the airport expanded, homes had to be removed due to noise. SeaTac is located approximately 15 miles south of downtown Seattle and 17 miles north of downtown Tacoma.
