Along with its larger neighbor Champaign, Urbana is co-host to the University of Illinois' main campus. It was founded in 1833, the same year as Chicago, and burned down on October 9, 1871, the same day as the Chicago Fire. The University of Illinois is in fact a leader in computer science, and played a major role in the invention of the internet. Urbana was mentioned in "2001: A Space Odyssey" as the birthplace of the HAL 9000 computer.
