Willoughby Hills, affectionately known as "Where the City Meets the Country," is a suburb located in the Lakeland section of western Lake County 18 miles east of downtown Cleveland. Part of the original Willoughby Township, the city incorporated in 1954. A number of acres within the city along the western bank of the Chagrin River have been preserved as the northern half of the Cleveland Metroparks North Chagrin Reservation. The reservation contains Squire's Castle, the gatehouse of the planned but never realized estate of Feargus B. Squire (1850-1932) vice-president of the Standard Oil Co. of Ohio, serving under its famed president John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937).
