An Allegheny County borough located approximately 7 miles down the Monongahela River from Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh. Set on the western bank of the Monongahela River across the Homestead High-Level Bridge from Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill South neighborhood, the city center, including the bridge, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A highly industrialized, steel-producing city for much of its history, the borough was home to the Carnegie Steel Company's Homestead Works and the tragic 1892 labor strike against the plant. Today, the reuse of these industrial areas has begun. The former U. S. Steel site along the river has been developed into The Waterfront shopping and entertainment complex.
