Memphis is located in the southwestern corner of the state of Tennessee. Situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, the downtown area rises from a bluff along the river. This historic southern city is the second largest in the state. The birthplace of blues and rock ’n roll, the city is widely recognized for its musical heritage. A vibrant tourism industry welcomes visitors from around the world to Graceland and the blues clubs and restaurants along Beale Street. Elvis, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash all recorded at the historic Sun Records, which is now a museum. The city is headquarters to AutoZone, FedEx, and International Paper. The city was also the birthplace of the familiar Holiday Inn hotel chain, which pioneered a standardized hotel experience. Although Memphis is on the largest river in the United States, it gets all of its drinking water from underground aquifers. This fresh water supply is one of the finest in the world and a natural resource that attracts industries from breweries to biotech companies to the city.
