Palo Alto is a city located in Santa Clara County, 32 miles southeast of San Francisco. It was founded in 1894 and officially incorporated as a city in 1909. Palo Alto was named for a 1,200 year old giant redwood which stands in El Palo Alto Park. The city is a regional center of retail, financial and professional services, medicine, and research. Stanford University is located just west of the city limits.
