Founded in 1868 and incorporated in 1888, Orange is located in northwestern Orange County on the Santa Ana River, about 25 miles southeast of Los Angeles. At one time a center for orange growing, by the 1960s suburban growth had displaced nearly all the citrus groves. Several industries such as quartz crystal, foam rubber, and polyurethane production are an important part of the city's economy. A small traditional downtown area at the intersection of Chapman Avenue and Glassell Street has been superceded by suburban-style commercial development, particularly around The Block at Orange in the southwestern corner of the city.
