Monroe is located on the Ouachita River about 100 miles east of Shreveport. It is the seat of Ouachita Parish and the trading center of northeastern Louisiana. The economy is based on agricultural products, manufacturing, barge traffic, and natural gas (it is located over one of the largest natural gas fields in the United States). Settled by traders and trappers in the early 1700s, the settlement was renamed in 1819 in honor of the "James Monroe," the first steamboat to reach the town.
